Coheed and Cambria

Coheed and Cambria es una banda de rock progresivo de Nueva York fundada originalmente por Claudio Sánchez (voz y guitarra), Zach Cooper (bajo y voces), Travis Stever (guitarra y voces) y Josh Eppard (batería) en 2000. En 1996 fundaron Shabütie, a la que, posteriormente, se la renombraría por el actual Coheed and Cambria.

Coheed and Cambria tiene 4 álbumes de estudio, todos conceptuales y entrelazados bajo el nombre general de The Bag On The Line Adventures (saga de cómics escritos por Coheed and Cambria y actualmente conocida como The Amory Wars). The Amory Wars, es una serie de comics escritos por el cantante Claudio Sánchez. La banda ha publicado además dos álbumes en vivo, y varias ediciones especiales.

Antes de marzo de 1995, Claudio Sánchez y Travis Stever, entre otros, formaban Toxic Parents y Nate Kelley estaba en la agrupación Moe & The Boogie Cats. Ambos grupos se disuelven y en marzo de 1995 los tres, más el bajista Jon Carleo, se reúnen y forman Beautiful Loser, bajo el liderazgo de Stever en las voces y en la guitarra. Sin embargo, la vida de esta nueva banda sería muy corta, ya que en junio de 1995 Stever abandona, tomando Sánchez el liderazgo de la banda.

A partir de 1996 la banda se renombra a sí misma Shabütie, nombre que toman de los cantos de una tribu africana en la película The Naked Prey. Durante su primer año la banda escribe un sinfín de canciones de muy distitnos estilos que pueden ir del punk rock al heavy metal pasando por el folk o el indie rock. En agosto de 1996 Carleo deja Shabütie y reclutan a Michael Todd, quien ya trabajó con Kelley en una banda llamada Esme 9. Todd era guitarrista, pero se ajusta al bajo, pues la guitarra ya estaba ocupada por Sánchez.
En 1999 graban y lanzan su primer trabajo oficial, el EP Plan to Take Over the World. Claudio Sánchez alterna Shabütie con un nuevo proyecto paralelo, The Prize Fighter Inferno. También, en este año, vuelve Stever a la banda para ocupar el puesto de segundo guitarra y lanzan The Penelope EP, segundo trabajo del grupo. Pero la banda comienza a tener problemas debido a la bebida durante algunos conciertos, con la correspondiente pérdida de calidad acústica en ellos. El 19 de febrero de 2000, Kelley abandona el grupo y lo reemplaza Josh Eppard. Poco después, la banda lanza su tercer y último EP, Delirium Trigger, y un avance de lo que sería The Second Stage Turbine Blade, ya como Coheed and Cambria. Un avance porque de los cinco temas que presenta Delirium Trigger, tres de ellos aparecen en el primer álbum de estudio de Coheed and Cambria. En 2001, Shabütie se desintegra dando lugar a Coheed and Cambria.

Coheed and Cambria lo forman originariamente cuatro miembros: Claudio Sánchez (como cantante y guitarra), Travis Stever (guitarra), Michael Todd (bajo y voces secundarias) y Josh Eppard (batería). El nombre proviene de Coheed Kilgannon y Cambria Kilgannon, los protagonistas de The Amory Wars, saga de comics en los cuales se basan los discos de la banda.
Con estos comics, la banda narra su historia y vivencias personales. Cada libro de cómic tiene su disco correspondiente, con el mismo título de la narración original. Los discos no siguen un orden cronológico de las series de cómics, ya que el último disco que saque Coheed and Cambria será la primera parte de la historia.
El primer disco conceptual es The Second Stage Turbine Blade, segunda parte de los cómics The Amory Wars, lanzado en 2002 por Equal Vision Records. Durante un año la banda de Claudio Sánchez hace una importante gira por Estados Unidos y Europa, presentando su disco y logrando cosechar éxito entre los seguidores del panorama alternativo con sencillos como "Devil in Jersey City"...
