The Cure

The Cure es una banda británica de rock que comenzó su carrera a finales de los setenta con la edición del LP Three Imaginary Boys (Boys don't cry en USA).
Es muy difícil encasillar a The Cure en un sólo estilo musical, tomando en cuenta el sonido de la banda a lo largo de su extensa carrera, ya que en algunos trabajos se puede escuchar un sonido claramente gotico, darkwave, Synthpop ("One Houndred Years" y "Prayers for Rain", mientras que en otros se puede encontrar música new wave, alegre u optimista ("Mint car" o "In between days", sonidos post-punk ("M" o "A Play For Today" y hasta ciertos toques de electrónica.





No obstante, la apariencia estética característica del líder de la banda, Robert Smith, frecuentemente vestido con ropa negra y mostrando un rostro pálido y un lápiz de labios borroneado en la boca, sumado a letras que con frecuencia son introspectivas y existenciales, han hecho que la banda sea asociada generalmente con el rock gótico. Smith rechaza esta categorización y se niega a enmarcar a la banda dentro de un único género: "Es tan triste que a the Cure se le siga llamando gótico [...] No somos categorizables. Supongo que eramos Post-Punk cuando salimos, pero globalmente es imposible categorizarnos. [...] Yo toco música de the Cure, sea lo que sea que esto signifique."

Entre el año de su formación, 1976, y 2004, The Cure había logrado vender alrededor de 31 millones de discos en todo el mundo.
Hasta 2008, The Cure ha editado 13 álbumes de estudio, treinta y cuatro singles y numerosos recopilatorios y reediciones. The Cure fueron nominados en 1993 al Grammy como mejor banda de música alternativa. Y en 2009, recibieron el premio Godlike Genius (Genio Divino) otorgados por la publicación NME (New Musical Express).

La primera banda antecesora de The Cure se llamó The Obelisk, banda formada en 1973, en el Notre Dame Middle School en Crawley, Sussex, y compuesta por Robert Smith (voz, piano), Michael Dempsey (guitarra), Lol Tolhurst (batería), Marc Ceccagno (guitarra solista) y Alan Hill (Bajo eléctrico). Tres años más tarde, en enero de 1976, Marc Ceccagno formaba una nueva banda, Malice junto a Robert Smith (ya a la guitarra) y Michael Dempsey (cambiando al bajo) y Paul Stephen Thompson otros dos estudiantes del St. Wilfrid's Catholic Comprehensive School. Ceccagno dejó pronto el grupo, para formar una banda de fusión Jazz-Rock llamada Amulet. Los miembros restantes de Malice, Smith y Dempsey cambiaron su nombre por Easy Cure en enero de 1977. En este momento, la influencia del omnipresente punk rock se comenzaba a hacer patente en el estilo musical del grupo. La entrada de Lol Tolhurst como baterista, y el fichaje de Porl Thompson a la guitarra solista terminaron de configurar el primer plantel de Easy Cure. La banda probó durante estos meses a distintos vocalistas sin tener mucho éxito, hasta que Smith asumió finalmente el papel de vocalista y de líder del grupo en septiembre de 1977.



Ese mismo año de 1977, Easy Cure ganaba una competición de talentos con el sello alemán Hansa Records, recibiendo como premio un contrato de grabación. El resultado de esta colaboración fueron algunas canciones de Easy Cure que nunca han sido editadas. En marzo de 1978, tras desencuentros con el sello acerca de la dirección que el grupo debía tomar, Easy Cure decidía romper su contrato con Hansa. Según Smith, el sello quería convertirlos en una banda para adolescentes, realizando versiones de otros grupos, lo que iba en contra del espíritu de la banda.

En mayo de ese mismo año, Thompson dejaba la banda. El trío restante, (Smith/Tolhurst/Dempsey) era rebautizado por Smith en ese momento, para asumir ya su nombre definitivo, The Cure. A finales de mayo, la banda realizaba sus primeras sesiones de estudio en los estudios Chestnut de Sussex. La maqueta resultante de estas sesiones sería enviada a una docena de sellos importantes. Chris Parry, por entonces buscador de talento de Polydor, se puso en contacto con la banda tras escucharla. Se despidió de Polydor, formando el sello Fiction, y contratando a The Cure en septiembre de 1978. Entre septiembre y diciembre de ese mismo año, Parry negoció con Polydor un acuerdo de distribución para Fiction, acuerdo que se materializaba el 22 de diciembre con la edición del sencillo de debut de la banda Killing an Arab, inspirada en El extranjero, de Albert Camus.



Tras las acusaciones de racismo recibidas por el sencillo desde algunos medios poco informados, motivadas por el título del mismo, la banda ponía una pegatina en la reedición de 1979 del sencillo negando connotación racista alguna. Días antes de la edición del sencillo, la banda recibía una de sus primeras críticas. NME escribía que "The Cure son como una bocanada de aire fresco suburbano en el circuito contaminado de pubs y clubs de la capital [...] Con una sesión de John Peel y la continuación de su gira por Londres en su agenda más inmediata, falta por ver si The Cure puede mantener su refrescante joie de vivre."





En su primera etapa musical, The Cure desarrolló un estilo propio dentro de la corriente del post punk, siendo considerados un grupo del culto en la primera mitad de los años 80. Alcanzaron altas cuotas de popularidad en Inglaterra con sus singles "A Forest", perteneciente a su segundo trabajo Seventeen Seconds de 1980 y en EE. UU. con "Boys Don't Cry", perteneciente a su primer LP (edición americana) Boys Don't Cry (1980). En 1981, la banda se reunió de nuevo con Mike Hedges, productor de Seventeen Seconds, para grabar su siguiente álbum, Faith, que reincidía en la instropeccion y la atmósfera contenidos en Seventeen Seconds. El álbum alcanzaría el decimocuarto puesto en las listas británicas en 1981.7 A finales de 1981, The Cure lanzó el sencillo Charlotte Sometimes, basado en la novela homónima de Penelope Farmer, que insólitamente no está incluido en ningún álbum de estudio de la banda.




En este momento, la música y la actitud de la banda se habían vuelto extremadamente introspectiva, de manera que, durante las actuaciones, no se atendían las peticiones de temas más antiguos y alegres y, en ocasiones, Robert Smith se veía tan absorbido por el personaje que había de proyectar sobre el escenario que abandonaba los conciertos llorando.
The Cure alcanzó su punto álgido en la consecución de un sonido atmosférico en 1982, con la publicación de Pornography. Después de la publicación de este disco, y la consecuente gira promocional Fourteen Explicit Moments el grupo quedó inactivo por un periodo, por problemas internos, que llevaron a Robert Smith a plantearse seriamente la separación. La salida de Simon Gallup de la formación tras los incidentes que protagonizó junto a Smith durante la gira de Pornography había dejado al grupo como un dúo, compuesto solamente por el propio Smith y Lol Tolhurst...
